Many job seekers are told their CV must "beat the ATS" or reach a certain "ATS score". The reality is more useful, and less scary. Understanding what applicant tracking systems really do helps you spend your time on what matters.
Myth 1: There is one official ATS score
There is no universal ATS score. There are many different systems, such as Workday, Oracle Taleo, SAP SuccessFactors, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS and others, and each employer configures them differently. Some rank candidates by how well their profile matches the job; many simply store applications and let recruiters search and filter.
Online CV scores, including ours, are estimates of how readable and relevant your CV is. They are a useful guide, not a number an employer sees.
Myth 2: The ATS automatically rejects most CVs
Most rejections are made by people, not software. Automatic rejection usually comes from knockout questions in the application form, such as "Do you have the right to work in this country?" or "Do you have five years of experience?", answered in a way that does not meet the employer's requirements.
What the software does decide is whether a recruiter finds you. If your CV is hard to read or missing the words recruiters search for, you can end up at the bottom of a long list.
Myth 3: You need a special ATS template
You do not need a special template. You need a clean one: single column, standard headings, real text rather than images, and consistent dates. Simple designs read well in every system. See how to write an ATS-friendly CV.
Myth 4: More keywords means a higher ranking
Keywords help recruiters find you, but stuffing your CV with them backfires as soon as a person reads it. Use the job's important terms where they honestly describe your experience, and back each one with evidence. See CV keywords without keyword stuffing.
Myth 5: PDFs cannot be read by ATS
Modern systems read text-based PDFs well. The problems come from scanned PDFs, CVs exported as images, and complex designs with text boxes. If you can select and copy the text in your PDF, a system can read it too. When a posting asks for Word, send Word.
What actually improves your chances
- A clear, readable layout.
- A CV tailored to each job, with the job's must-have requirements visible on page one. See how to tailor your CV.
- Honest, specific evidence with results.
- Correct answers to application questions, and practical details such as location and availability.
- Applying early. Many roles are filled from the first batch of good applications.
